A thrift store, on the site here, is a non-profit, charitable-contributing store that is (presumably) all completely run by volunteer, unpaid employees. Most have fixed prices and it is not possible to haggle over the prices. The stores contribute to many different purposes, both at home and abroad.

In Denmark, thrift stores typically send around 75%-90% of their turnover to charity, as the only expenses are really for rent and heat/electricity. In other countries, e.g. In Great Britain, only around 25% of turnover goes to charity, as there are many salaried employees here.

Thrift shops that support specific purposes do not have to pay VAT in Denmark, and therefore no VAT is added to the price. Remember that it is volunteers who most often set the prices and they do not always have knowledge of what a product is really worth. This may of course mean that some goods may be more expensive than elsewhere and vice versa. It also means that you can be lucky to make a good deal. In general, however, the prices are quite low compared to buying new.

They are very different from what the thrift stores sell. Some stores only sell used clothing, others only sell used furniture. In general, you can find almost anything in thrift stores, from children's clothing, men's and women's clothing, jewelry, hats, toys, books, LPs, music CDs, movie DVDs and VHS tapes, lamps, electronics, china, glass, furniture, telephones, posters, trade books, novels, reference works and plastic goods.

On this website you can see a map of more than 1,000 non-profit thrift stores in Denmark or find thrift stores in each city/postcode. Use the menu items at the top of the page.
